The administration of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art “MACAM Tunis”, in the City of Culture, received copies of two valuable books on the experience of the late Lebanese artist Gebran Tarazi (1944 – 2010). The first book, titled “Geometric Variations”, written by the artist, was published in 2007, in which he presents his aesthetic contemplations and creative vision. It includes a philosophical artistic manifesto written by the artist Gebran Tarazi entitled “Oriental Need” as well as a second book “Twelve Seasons” 2017 published by the “Zaman” publishing house in Paris.

The two books were donated to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art by the Embassy of Tunisia in Lebanon, where the family of the artist Gebran Tarazi took the initiative to communicate with His Excellency the Ambassador of the Tunisian Republic, His Excellency Mr. Bouraoui Limam, during the year 2023, by presenting the two books as a donation to the museum. Mrs. Ahlam Bousandal, Director General of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, posted a thank you note on the museum’s official Facebook page (in Arabic, French and English) in appreciation of the experience of the artist Gebran Tarazi and welcoming the donation of the books sent.

Gebran Tarazi comes from a family that has inherited traditions of creating and designing traditional arts, such as floral designs and arabesques, since the year 1860, which has inspired him through life and spiritual experience to give this heritage unique contemporary and personal dimensions, which has given his experience an important status, whether within private collections or other museums. For example, his exhibition in Paris in 2016, where his works were displayed alongside the works of international artist Vasarely, and his exhibition in 2017, in the Saleh Barakat Gallery in Beirut, considered one of the most important private exhibition halls in the Arab region.

The experience of the artist Gebran Tarazi has also received wide critical attention, since several valuable studies have been published on him in Arabic, French and English, in specialized and comprehensive periodicals published in Arab capitals such as Baghdad, Cairo, the Gulf countries and the Kingdom of Morocco, as well as in periodicals published in Western capitals such as Paris, Rome and London. As for Tunisia, the experience of Gebran Tarazi attracted the attention of the doctor in aesthetics, researcher Professor Rachida Triki.
Moreover, the Tunisian artist and art critic “Amor Ghedamsi” has published an in-depth critical study entitled “Gebran Tarazi in the Spirit of the Ancestors and the Insight of the Creators”. He also published a second article entitled “The paintings of the Lebanese artist Gebran Tarazi in the Spirit of Kairouan”, in which he discusses the origins and references of the artist, which extend to the visual heritage found in the Arab Maghreb, particularly in ancient cities like Fez, Kairouan and Tlemcen.

The critical study was published in the Al Sahafa Al-Youm newspaper, and the article was published in the literary supplement of the Al-Chourouk newspaper. Several Tunisian and Moroccan newspapers were also interested in what was published, and we cite here the newspaper of the Moroccan Socialist Union. Prominent Lebanese translator Dr. Hind Terro also translated these two articles by Amor Ghedamsi on Gebran Tarazi into French and English, and the translation was published on French and English-speaking Moroccan sites, including “Italia Telegraph”, “Hespress English” and the Tunisian journal “Le Quotidien”.
