The inaugural Republican primary debate for the upcoming presidential election in the United States took place on the Fox News stage, featuring eight candidates. However, one conspicuous absence was the frontrunner in this primary race, Donald Trump. The former president declined to participate, asserting his lead in the polls and maintaining that his track record during his tenure in the White House speaks for itself. In Trump’s absence, his opponents engaged in debate, yet no candidate managed to distinctly set themselves apart.

Throughout the debate, no clear winner emerged, and no moment seemed poised to shift the current dynamics. Ultimately, without a pronounced victor, the spotlight turned back to Trump. As one commentator aptly summarized, “The winner is Trump.” Nevertheless, a significant moment stood out when Bret Baier, the Fox News journalist, inquired which among the candidates would continue to support the former president even if he were to face conviction. Five out of the eight candidates raised their hands.

None of the eight candidates were able to convincingly position themselves as a credible alternative to Trump. Positioned at the center of the stage, his closest competitor, trailing by 40 to 50 points in polls, failed to sway opinion. Ron DeSantis appeared reserved and uncomfortable, and other candidates refrained from directing any significant attacks his way. In contrast, Vivek Ramaswamy, a young populist entrepreneur, the third contender in this campaign, garnered attention for his stance on cutting all U.S. military aid to Ukraine. Nikki Haley, the sole female candidate on the stage and former U.S. ambassador to the UN, remarked, “You lack foreign policy experience, and it shows.”

Across America, at the “Angry Elephant,” a Texas bar, citizens tuned in to watch the debate. For some, Trump’s decision to abstain from the debate seemed strategic. “It’s a smart move. He’s leading in the polls, so why become a target?” commented one individual.

Meanwhile, Trump made his presence felt in an alternate manner, effectively employing counter-programming. A mere five minutes before the debate’s commencement, popular populist figure Tucker Carlson shared a pre-recorded interview with Trump on Twitter. Within three hours, the video had amassed nearly 100 million views.

“Why aren’t you at the Milwaukee debate?” Tucker inquired. Trump responded, “I’m dominating the polls with a fifty-point lead, so I’ll pass this time. Why subject myself to two hours of harassment by individuals who shouldn’t even be running?”

Trump, consistent in his character, took the opportunity to once again dismiss the four charges against him as “complete nonsense.” Furthermore, on this particular Thursday, the primary favorite was slated to appear at the Atlanta prison authorities, owing to his indictment for attempting to overturn his 2020 electoral loss in Georgia. Trump recognized that he would, once again, commandeer the media space, overshadowing his competitors.
