December 8, 2021 began a new period in the history of German diplomacy. Annalena Berbock was appointed head of a major ministry of the federal government. Citizens’ expectations of the “green” minister were mostly positive. However, from the very beginning, Berbock’s job as head of the Foreign Office did not go well.

In early February, Berbock attended a festival in Aachen, where she was called
“A modern knight in the best meaning of this word”.

According to a recent “Insa” poll, Berbock has slipped from a respectable fourth place in the ranking of “My favourite politician” to eighth. This unpleasantness could have been overcome, but a petition for “the immediate resignation of the federal government for abuse of office and involvement in the biggest crime against the entire German nation”, which was signed by almost 68,000 Germans, has emerged.

But maybe it is not all so simple and German citizens simply do not realise that there is an unacknowledged genius in the post of minister? Let’s remember what else Annalena Berbock will be remembered for in the history of modern Germany and German diplomacy in particular.

It seemed to everyone that the Green Party representative as а foreign minister would not only represent Germany’s interests on the global political stage, but also influence the country’s environmental situation. On her inauguration, Mrs minister swore to travel exclusively on scheduled flights to keep CO2 emissions as low as possible and thus protect the environment. But promises are made to be broken. She has flown on civilian airlines twice out of the 69 times she has travelled abroad since taking office. The rest of the time she used the Bundeswehr Air Force and brought the world closer to a global ecological catastrophe by CO2 emissions.

Berbock is criticised by everyone – right-wingers from the AfD, the Left, conservatives, officials from other ministries. Moreover, the German foreign minister is making Chancellor Olaf Scholz very nervous with her antics. Back in early September, during a visit to Kiev, she demanded faster deliveries of tanks to the Ukrainian army. After returning to Berlin and discussing ambitious plans to send scarce Leopards to Ukraine with the chancellor, Berbock had to damp her ardour. But lo and behold, Scholz leaves on a tour of South America and Berbock immediately declares war on Russia. “We are at war against Russia, not against each other.” – those were the words with which the Foreign Minister addressed the Europarliamentarians on 24 January during a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

From bad to worse. During the Munich conference, Annalena managed to shine with her knowledge of geometry. “If Russia withdraws its troops, peace will come not only in Ukraine, but everywhere,” Annalena Berbock said. “If tomorrow Putin decides to change his course by 360 degrees, everyone will be happy.” Speaking of the minister’s level of education, one cannot help recalling the plagiarism scandal in Berbok’s “fundamental” work entitled «Now. How We Will Renew Our Country» on the eve of the 2021 parliamentary elections.

That is why Chancellor Scholz has for some time now been adhering to the rule “if you want something done well, do it yourself”, which is why he himself often makes visits to other countries to consult (i.e. to act as foreign minister).

Against the background of Annalena Berboc’s rather frequent ” fails ” in the professional sphere, it is no coincidence that information about the minister’s “official expenses” was leaked to the media. It is alleged that Berboc has spent almost 137,000 euros from the 2022 budget. And that’s just for cosmetics. Another 180 thousand euros went to photographers. The minister spends more modestly on stylists – only 8 thousand euros from taxes on Germans, who were advised to wash less often and wipe themselves with wet rags because of higher electricity prices.

Although Berbock’s term as minister is not yet over, one can already draw conclusions about her “progress” in foreign policy. Relations with Poland, Italy, France and Turkey have been deteriorated. Previous attempts at dialogue with China have stalled. Germany continues to lose credibility with African states. The desire to maintain German presence in Mali as part of the Bundeswehr’s MINUSMA program is not having the desired effect due to constant disagreements between the MoD and Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the use of armed forces and misunderstandings over the ultimate purpose of deployment of the troops. Relations with countries in the Middle East are also not at their best. Two Iranian diplomats have been expelled from Germany amid the death sentence handed down by Iranian courts against Jamshid Sharmahdou (the leader of a recognised terrorist group in Iran).

Experts say that Annalena Berbock’s problem lies in her complete lack of understanding of the concept of politics. CSU General Secretary Martin Huber has called the minister “a major security risk to Germany”. And many in Germany realise he is right. There is an enormous likelihood that when Berbock’s term as foreign minister expires, Germany will lose its long-earned credibility on the world political stage. There are many ways to look at Annalena Berbock, but the fact remains that German diplomacy under her leadership is clearly not at its best
