Dr. Hassan Merhej, expert on Syrian and Middle Eastern affairs.
We are accustomed to analyzing reality as it is, far from wishful thinking. Political realism in reading the scene requires us to present clear data and facts, specifically in crucial issues that have a direct impact on the level of the Middle East, and given that the war launched against Syria was not for the sake of reforms or freedoms. Or anything like that. Rather, this war was launched to make the world powers aware of the importance of Syria’s location and role in the overall regional and international balances, and what could result from that in terms of political, military and economic files. Most importantly, Syria has always been an obstacle to the plans that are being hatched throughout the region. Which made the Syrian state a point of balance and meeting place for regional and international projects.
The centrality of Syria in the Middle East conflict is represented by its role as an important country in the region and its influence on regional events and dynamics, as Syria is considered a crucial geographical and political axis in the conflicts taking place in the region, including the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, and the tensions between Iran and some Gulf states, in addition to… Therefore, Syria has historically played a major role in engineering many regional events, but the conflict that Syria has witnessed since 2011 was a turning point in the regional scene, and the nature of the war on Syria and its goals and objectives were not able to exclude the Syrian role and its regional and international influences.
In this pivotal context, Syria’s influence includes political and security dimensions. At the political level, Syria affects the distribution of regional and international powers in the Middle East. Syria has played a decisive role in the balances of the Middle East because of its strategic location and its influence on the region in general. For example, Syria is a neighbor of Israel and has significant influence over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and it also controls important energy sources such as oil and natural gas, making it a major player in the region’s energy sector.
In addition, Syria supports resistance factions and countries opposed to the American project in the region, and this matter had a major impact in changing American plans time and again, which affected the form of conflicts and tensions in the Middle East.
In addition, the ongoing conflict in Syria affects security and stability in the region in general. Accordingly, regional and international countries must work to exploit Syria’s role to achieve peace and stability in the region, and diplomatic efforts must expand to find a political solution to the conflict in Syria and support efforts to bring peace to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It must also work to enhance economic and energy cooperation between Syria and other countries in the region to achieve balance and stability.
Syria’s role in the balances of the Middle East is crucial and pivotal. Although the ongoing conflict in Syria has led to the deterioration of security and stability in the region, Syria still plays an important role in shaping regional balances, and this can be summarized as follows:
First, we must mention Syria’s role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Syria is considered a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause and their right to establish an independent state, as Syria hosts many Palestinian organizations and groups, and works to strengthen unity and solidarity among Palestinians. This role is considered pivotal in the balances of the region, as it affects relations between Israel and the Arab countries and the political course of the conflict.
Second, Syria’s economic role is crucial to the balances of the Middle East. Syria possesses important natural resources such as natural gas and oil, and these resources are an important source of national income and economic strength. The economic and energy balance in the region is affected by developments in the Syrian economy, and therefore Syria’s role in this field is considered pivotal.
Third, the Syrian conflict affects security and stability in the region in general. Foreign interventions and escalation in Syria have exacerbated the crisis and spread security threats, which means that restoring security and stability in Syria is crucial to achieving balance in the Middle East.
In general, it can be said that Syria plays a pivotal role in the balances of the Middle East thanks to its support for the Palestinian cause and its economic and security influence in the region, and therefore regional and international countries must work to exploit this role to achieve peace and stability in Syria and the region in general.
