At the start of a hunger strike, hunger pains usually disappear after two or three days, and after the third day, the body begins to use the protein it stores in the muscle to produce glucose.
Levels of essential mineral salts, such as potassium, also drop to dangerous levels and the body loses fat and muscle mass.
After two weeks, the hunger striker may have difficulty standing, and may also experience severe dizziness, lethargy, weakness, loss of balance, low heart rate and start feeling cold.
After up to three weeks, low levels of Thiamine (vitamin B1) becomes a real risk, and can lead to severe neurological problems, including cognitive impairment, loss of consciousness, and a lack of motor skills.
But when the hunger strike reaches a month, or when more than 20% of ones body weight is lost, severe and permanent medical complications occur, then swallowing water becomes exceedingly difficult, and the person may lose their hearing and sight, even breathing becomes stressful and the job of body members start to degrade until they reach total failure.
But after 50 days of hunger strike, “DEATH becomes a real danger, due to cardiovascular failure.”
For a person to choose this path in defence of their dignity and freedom, is not an easy matter … But the feeling of injustice may push a person to the farthest and most extreme limits.
Suleiman is from a family with a long history of resistance.
It has produced over generations men and women who stood in the face of injustice and corruption, and he is without a doubt one of them.
Today, he lives that same injustice which has become clear to everyone.
Whoever knows Suleiman knows that his hunger strike will end either with his FREEDOM or his DEATH !!!
We do not want Suleiman to die, we want for him to live for his only child and wife, we want him to enjoy a fair trial in a state of release in accordance with the amendments of the constitution and the law.
We want for the voice of reason and wisdom to intervene before disaster strikes.
And God bears witness that our hearts are with him and that we can only pray for his relief …
Being a true, respected and honourable Journalist comes at heavy price, little did we know that that price could lead to self-destruction !!!
